Is Microsoft Global Secure Access a VPN?
Microsoft Global Secure Access is not a VPN. However, by providing a secure service edge (SSE), it is providing greater security than a VPN. With a SSE in place, there is no requirement for a VPN.
What licence is required for Global Secure Access?
To use Microsoft Global Secure Access, you must have one of the following licences:
- Microsoft Entra Suite
- A standalone licence for both Microsoft Entra Internet Access and Microsoft Entra Private Access
- Microsoft Entra ID P1 or Microsoft Entra ID P2 (this will provide Entra Internet Access capabilities only).
Global Secure Access is the umbrella term used to refer to both Entra Private Access and Entra Internet Access. You can operate one of these without needing to licence the other.
What is the difference between Microsoft Global Secure Access and Zscaler?
Global Secure Access’ strengths lie in its native integration with Microsoft tenants. It is easy to adopt within an existing Microsoft infrastructure, providing employees with effective and secure access to company resources and the internet. That is not to say that it cannot be employed to secure third-party applications.
Zscaler is another SSE tool that provides similar features whilst being vendor-agnostic. It can apply to any number of non-Microsoft products, however its integration with the Microsoft suite is not as organic and requires further configuration.
