Is cyber security a legal requirement?
In short, there is no single answer to this question, as different sectors and countries are governed by different regulations.
In the UK, if you are regulated by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority), there is no specific requirement for you to align with a cyber security compliance program. However, if you work in an industry such as finance, accounting, or law, you are in possession of sensitive data, which puts you at greater risk of being targeted. It is, therefore, recommended that you understand the cyber risk to your business and review your security controls.
If you are in the US, the SEC is the regulatory agency for financial markets and organisations failing to protect data and systems could face a large fine and substantial business disruption.
If you are a global business, the international standard is ISO 27001. Businesses dealing with large enterprises often require that their cyber security compliance program aligns with ISO 27001. This involves implementing detailed, expansive security measures to fulfil compliance obligations.

Does compliance equal security?
