How Can Technology Support Startups?

I’ve been Chief Operating Officer at CloudTech24 for over eight years and have played a key role in its growth from a team of three people in 2018 to a business of 45 and growing today. During that time, we’ve achieved more than 25 times revenue growth while building a reputation for delivering high-quality managed IT and cyber security services.

My career began in sales and IT support before progressing into website hosting, technical pre-sales and leadership. That experience has given me a broad understanding of both the commercial and technical aspects of running a successful technology business.

As Chief Operating Officer for CloudTech24, I lead our operations, technical services and customer experience. I’ve helped shape our technology strategy, securing Microsoft Tier 1 Direct Partner status, Microsoft Modern Work Solutions Partner and Security designations, while maintaining our Google Workspace partnership and introducing new technologies that continue to strengthen our services.

I’m passionate about building high-performing teams, improving the way we work and using automation and AI to help businesses become more efficient, secure and resilient.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing 7-a-side football, keeping up with the latest tech and gadgets, and spending time with my two Maine Coon cats. I’m also a long-time Call of Duty fan, especially from the OG Verdansk and Rebirth Island days.

Starting a business is hard. It takes an enormous amount of time, effort, and learning. The grind of starting and growing a business can be made easier by utilising the right technology at the right time. But what is this technology, and how can it be used to support the business as it goes forward?

Cloud Technology

Utilising cloud services and storage is a huge benefit to any business as they start out. Firstly, they’re cheaper than buying or hiring on-site equipment.  Secondly, the ease of scaling these services (for example, having more storage available for documents as and when you need it) makes cloud technology a must-have for any business as it grows.

Microsoft 365 provides a suite of applications that provide critical functions such as word processing, email exchange, data entry and management, and storage. By housing these applications under one platform, they are easily accessible from a central portal, and instantly available to new members of staff as the team grows.

Communication and Collaboration

As businesses start, it’s not uncommon for helping hands to come from outside of the business. Growing a business also requires sales, which in turn requires the ability to communicate.

Technologies such as Microsoft Teams and Sharepoint provide platforms for businesses to work together on projects, for in-house staff to talk to one another and make calls, and enable effective project management, whether it is focused on client projects or business operations.

Data & Analysis

The best decisions in business are made using data. Data-driven business operations result in resilient businesses that are in the best place possible to capitalise and grow. Data can be gathered from many places, both first party and third party. Naturally, owing to nature of data collation and analysis, technology plays a huge role.

Once this data is gathered and analysed, the takeaways can be used to inform decision-making. This mitigates the risk when it comes to making tough decisions, as choices can be supported by usage of available data sets. Applications such as Power BI can be leveraged to provide real insight and scaffold business development and operational efficiencies.

Market Reach

Putting the word out about your company’s goods and services comes down to effective marketing. Social technologies such as X, LinkedIn, and Meta provide platforms to send your messaging to the world. Additional technologies make posting across multiple channels simultaneously a breeze and supports the marketing efforts of any early-stage startups.

Innovation

Technology drives innovation. Innovation drives development. Development refines products and services. Choosing the right technology from the outset reduces the time taken to progress service delivery. This means that any start up with goals is more likely to reach those goals in a shorter timeframe if the right technology has been deployed.

Certain AI tools are helpful in a number of scenarios, for example Microsoft’s Copilot. Copilot can be used as a sounding board when writing a letter or drafting internal policy. It can also be used for support with code, for example when making website or product changes.

Others, such as AI and machine learning elements embedded into security products like Ironscales and CrowdStrike, can help protect businesses whilst they are in their growth stage (and beyond), to ensure that the business stays on course as it sets out to accomplish its mission.

The steep rise in ‘ClickFix’ style phishing attacks

What is ClickFix? ClickFix is a social engineering technique that the Security Operations team at CloudTech24 are seeing cybercriminals use to trick users into infecting their own devices. Typically, we find that a user is redirected to a fake verification page that impersonates a trusted service such as Cloudflare, Google reCAPTCHA, or a website security…

What is a virtual CISO (vCISO)?

Cybersecurity issues don’t pop up one at a time. They’re often frequent, urgent, and complex. When issues build up and the level of complexity increases to the point where your team needs an extra hand, having a vCISO can lighten the load. A vCISO (Virtual Chief Information Security Officer) is a security leader who serves…

Which one is better – AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?

Choosing the right cloud infrastructure is a decision you can’t take lightly. Today, businesses must decide whether to build their applications on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. While these platforms offer similar core features like storage and computing power, each vendor approaches infrastructure, security, and developer experience with a completely different philosophy. This blog breaks…
