How to protect your laptop while using public WiFi

It’s worth mentioning right off the bat that public wifi is great. 

It’s convenient for those who may not have data, or maybe they’re not able to connect to a friend’s hotspot, or are struggling with service in that specific area, and for all those reasons, public wifi is ideal when it needs to be.

But it does leave you more vulnerable than you would be on private networks to cyberattacks, with 40% of those who have used public WiFi reporting that their information has previously been compromised. 

Which is why, in this blog, we’ll break down why public wifi can be unsafe and what services or software you can use, like VPNs, firewalls, antivirus software, and two-factor authentication, to protect your laptop when on unsecured networks. 

Why public WiFi can be unsafe

Public WiFi is often less secure than private networks. They’re designed to be open and unencrypted so that people can easily connect to these networks for convenience. Still, their design also makes them far more vulnerable to a cyber attack. 

Cybercriminals are able to exploit vulnerabilities in unsecured networks to intercept your data and possibly steal personal information. 

What does a lack of encryption actually mean?

When we say that a WiFi network has a lack of encryption, it means that the data transmitted between the device you’re using and the network that you’re connected to isn’t safely scrambled (i.e. it’s not protected). Because of this, it makes it easier for hackers to intercept your information.

A lack of authentication

Like we mentioned above, anybody can connect to public networks. As convenient as that is, the lack of security makes it much easier for malicious hackers to join the same network and monitor your activity. 

Rogue WiFi hotspots

Cybercriminals can create fake WiFi hotspots with names similar to legitimate networks (like a hotel’s or a cafe’s WiFi) to trick users into connecting.

Once the unsuspecting user has connected, this gives the cybercriminal the freedom to monitor their traffic, steal personal and confidential information, and even install malware on their device. 

All the points above are just an insight into how many ways cybercriminals can target you when connected to unsecure networks. With the threat of malware and financial and personal data theft, it is crucial that users are aware of wi-fi safety.

WiFi Safety: Is it safe to use a VPN on public WiFi?

Short answer, yes.

Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on public WiFi is one of the best ways to protect your data when you’re connected to unsecured networks. 

When you connect through a VPN, your internet traffic is encrypted, making it extremely difficult for anyone on the same network to read or intercept your information. 

Not only does it encrypt your data, but a VPN also helps to:

  • Mask your IP address, further enhancing your privacy.
  • Creates a secure tunnel between your device and the internet, making man-in-the-middle attacks less likely.
  • Protects sensitive actions like online banking, logging into work accounts, and online shopping. 

Firewall on public WiFi

It’s highly recommended that you have a managed firewall service to act as your first line of defence against cybersecurity threats. Not just for public WiFi, but on an everyday basis. 

Specifically for public WiFi, though, you’ll get an essential layer of protection when you’re connected to an unsecure network. 

A firewall, if you’re not familiar, is essentially a gatekeeper between your device and the internet. It monitors traffic and blocks any suspicious access attempts. 

So, what does a firewall do to help?

  • It blocks unauthorised access from other devices on the same network. 
  • If using VPN and antivirus, the firewall works alongside the two to create a layered defence.
  • Doesn’t interfere with browsing as it quietly runs in the background.

Having a managed firewall service is crucial to act as your first line of defence against cybersecurity threats.

Using antivirus software on public WiFi

Even if you’re using a VPN and have your firewall enabled, you still need reliable antivirus software to protect your laptop from threats that might sneak through.

Public WiFi security risks often include malware, spyware, and viruses that can infect your device without you even noticing. Clicking a pop-up, downloading a file, or connecting to an unsecured WiFi network could leave you exposed — and that’s where antivirus software steps in.

With a VPN and firewall, you are generally much safer than the average person using public WiFi, and less likely to notice or be affected by potential cyberattacks. 

However, to safeguard you in the event of a sneak attack, it’s crucial that you also have antivirus software to protect your device. 

Antivirus software protects you from spyware and viruses that can infect your device without you even noticing, and with cyber threats becoming more prevalent when connected to an unsecured WiFi network, your antivirus software must be set up.

What does antivirus software do?

  • Detects and blocks malware in real time.
  • Scans downloads and email attachments for possible malware. 
  • Warns you about suspicious websites and phishing attempts.
  • Removes harmful files or programs before they can affect your device.

Choose an antivirus software that offers real-time protection, frequent updates, low system impact, and comprehensive features like malware scanning, phishing protection, and ransomware defence — especially if you regularly use public WiFi.

How 2FA is important for protection against unsecured networks

Two-factor authentication is the extra layer of protection in case a cybercriminal manages to obtain your password. So, if your password has been compromised, two-factor authentication can still stop attackers from gaining access. 

So, how does it help?

  • Adds a second layer of protection to your accounts.
  • Helps secure apps with sensitive data like email and banking.
  • Stops unauthorised access even if your password has been compromised.

Final thoughts: When to be wary of using public WiFi 

It’s crucial to be aware that even with all the protections you have, and as helpful as they are, you still need to be as safe with your data as possible. 

This means practising good cybersecurity habits, such as using strong, unique passwords and being wary of suspicious emails or links. 

By using a combination of strong security measures and smart personal practices, you significantly reduce the risk of data breaches and unwanted access to your confidential information, especially when operating with unsecured networks like public WiFi networks.
