How to choose a cloud deployment model

I’ve been Chief Operating Officer at CloudTech24 for over eight years and have played a key role in its growth from a team of three people in 2018 to a business of 45 and growing today. During that time, we’ve achieved more than 25 times revenue growth while building a reputation for delivering high-quality managed IT and cyber security services.

My career began in sales and IT support before progressing into website hosting, technical pre-sales and leadership. That experience has given me a broad understanding of both the commercial and technical aspects of running a successful technology business.

What is a cloud deployment model?

The use of the cloud has completely changed how businesses manage and access IT resources. 99% of businesses use the cloud in some way, shape, or form.

A “cloud deployment model” refers to the ways these cloud systems are set up, who manages them, who can use them, and whether resources or certain data are shared or used by a single organisation.

The main types are public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud, and multi-cloud.

What are the three types of cloud deployment models?

Public cloud deployment model

Public cloud is the most popular cloud deployment model among startups and small businesses. Using a public cloud means your data and applications are hosted by a third-party provider such as Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure.

It’s the most straightforward and cost-effective option for many businesses that want to utilise cloud computing without investing in their own infrastructure.

Pros of public cloud:

No upfront investment: You don’t need to buy hardware or software upfront, as they function on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Reliable and available: Public cloud providers are highly reliable and are available globally to any business.

The infrastructure is managed by the provider: You don’t need to worry about updates or bug fixes, as these are handled by the third party.

This type of model is usually chosen for its flexibility and cost-effectiveness, making it a popular choice for SMEs and startups.

Private cloud deployment model

A private cloud is a cloud deployment model where the cloud infrastructure is dedicated to a single organisation.

These can be hosted on-site by the organisation itself or by a third-party provider that offers private cloud services.

Unlike a public cloud, a private cloud is not shared with other organisations, so all resources, including servers, storage, and other infrastructure, are dedicated solely to your business.

Pros of private cloud:

Full control: Unlike public clouds, you have full control over everything – hardware, software, and security.

Fully customisable: Because you have control over everything, you can customise your cloud environment to meet your specific needs, whatever they may be.

Higher level of security: A private cloud generally offers a higher level of security with less risk.

Private clouds are chosen by organisations that need a high level of security and control over their data.

Hybrid cloud deployment model

A hybrid cloud combines public and private cloud elements, allowing data and applications to be shared between them.

This model allows businesses to take advantage of both public and private clouds and get the best of both worlds. You can rely on third-party public cloud services for certain tasks while keeping sensitive data on your private cloud.

Pros of hybrid cloud

Increased flexibility: For less sensitive tasks, you can use the public cloud, and for tasks where there are data security concerns, you can utilise your private cloud.

Control when needed: Because of its “best of both worlds” approach, hybrid clouds allow you to have control as and when you need it.

Hybrid clouds are used by organisations that want that balance between performance and compliance, where diverse workloads need to be managed.

What factors do you need to consider?

Preference plays a factor, but you also need to consider the following:

Security and compliance

Before even looking at features, benefits, and costs, you need to really consider the type of industry you are in and the level of security and compliance you need.

If you’re in a business that handles sensitive information, such as healthcare or finance, you need to ensure the cloud provider you choose has the necessary security measures in place to protect your data.

For industries subject to strict regulations, you’ll likely need to use a private cloud (or a hybrid cloud, depending on the level of compliance and the sensitivity of the data).

Performance

Your site, servers, network, and storage all live on your cloud provider’s infrastructure. That means you’re relying on them to keep everything running smoothly.

If your site or servers go down or have a performance issue, it can have a big impact on your business.

With a public cloud, you’re relying on the cloud provider to keep everything running smoothly. You have no control over the infrastructure, so if there’s an issue, you’ll have to wait for them to fix it.

With a private cloud, you have full control over the infrastructure, so you can make sure it’s always running smoothly, but it also means you need to have the expertise and resources to manage it

Cost effectiveness

This depends on your business model and how you use the cloud. If you have a lot of data and need a lot of computing power, a private cloud might be more cost-effective in the long run.

If you’re a smaller business or a startup and you don’t have a lot of budget or sensitive data that needs to be stored on a private cloud, a public cloud might be a better option.

This will ultimately be a battle between your finance and IT teams over whether you can afford to invest in a private cloud from the get-go or go for the more stable pay-as-you-go model of a public cloud.

Making the right choice for your business can have a big impact on your bottom line, so it’s important to consider all of your options before making a decision.
