How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your hardware?

I’ve been Chief Operating Officer at CloudTech24 for over eight years and have played a key role in its growth from a team of three people in 2018 to a business of 45 and growing today. When performance issues such as boot times, frequent crashes, and laggy apps persist and hinder your daily tasks, it may indicate that you should upgrade your hardware.

However, diving straight into IT procurement can be daunting, especially if you aren’t familiar with the parts of a computer.

This guide will walk you through the signs that it’s time to upgrade your hardware, which parts to upgrade first, and what to check before deciding.

How to know if your PC needs an upgrade

There are a couple of warning signs that indicate your PC is due for an upgrade, which include:

Performance bottlenecks

If using your PC is becoming more challenging and you’ve noticed a decline in performance, that’s usually a sign that the hardware is struggling to keep up.

When basic tasks like loading browsers, watching videos, or using simple software feel like a lot more effort than they should, it might be time to look at upgrading.

Hardware errors

If you’ve noticed any hardware issues, such as frequent crashes, blue screens of death (BSODs), or noisy fans, it’s time to consider upgrading your hardware. 

Errors like these occur when the hardware struggles to keep up with the demands of your operating system and applications.

Choosing to put up with these errors will only lead to more problems down the line.

Limited storage

If your system is only capable of storing a small amount of data, such as 128GB or 256GB, depending on what you use your PC for, you may need to upgrade your storage.

This is less of an issue nowadays, as you can rely on cloud storage, though it requires a monthly fee, so it’s still a good idea to have a backup of your data in case you lose access.

Age of components

If your computer’s components are more than five years old, that in itself can be a sign that it’s time to upgrade.

You should definitely focus more on your PC’s performance rather than upgrading for the sake of it, but catching up with the latest hardware before your older components fail is a good idea.

What are the alternatives to upgrading hardware?

Before deciding to upgrade your hardware, it’s important to consider the alternatives. It might not be necessary to upgrade your hardware if you can improve your PC’s performance through other means. This includes:

Cleaning the inside of your PC

One of the simplest ways to improve your PC’s performance is simply to clean the inside. Your computer’s fans are responsible for keeping the internal components cool, and if they’re clogged with dust, it’s just going to make your PC run hotter and slower.

Use an air compressor to blow dust out of your PC, and you should see improved performance.

Free up disk space

When your hard drive is full, it can slow down your PC’s performance. If you’ve got countless files, photos, or videos taking up space on your hard drive, a good start toward a faster PC is to free up some space.

Check for driver updates

Before you upgrade your hardware, check that all your drivers are up to date.

They’re not going to magically improve your PC’s performance, but they will ensure your hardware is compatible with your operating system, which can help prevent crashes and BSODs.

Explore lightweight operating systems

Windows is a great operating system, but it’s quite heavy, with a lot of bloatware. There are other operating systems, such as Linux.

Linux is much lighter and less demanding on your hardware. A lightweight Linux OS can breathe new life into a PC, as it is often far less demanding of CPU and RAM.

What should you upgrade on your pc first?

This all depends on what you use your PC for.

HDD vs SSD

The single most effective upgrade for an older PC is replacing a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) with a Solid State Drive (SSD)

An SSD is much faster than an HDD, and it can significantly improve your PC’s performance. It works by using memory to store data, which is much faster than the spinning disks used by HDDs.

It reduces your PC’s initial boot time from minutes to seconds and can also improve your applications’ performance.

Motherboard

Your motherboard is the foundation of your PC. It links all the other parts so they work efficiently. 

You can have the best GPU, CPU, or 128GB of RAM, but none of that will perform to the high standard they should if your motherboard is the weak link.

Before even thinking about upgrading your other components, make sure your motherboard supports the latest standards (like PCIe 5.0 or DDR5). Otherwise, you’ve just thrown money at improving your PC for zero performance gain.

Increasing RAM

RAM is your PC’s short-term memory. The more RAM you have, the more apps you can run, the more quickly you can switch between them, and the faster your PC will work overall.

The standard amount of RAM for a PC is 8GB, but nowadays, 16GB is the norm. With 16GB of RAM, you’ve got the freedom to run more demanding software like video editing and 3D software, and most games also require 16GB of RAM nowadays.

RAM is easy to install yourself, and if you look in the right places, you can get it for less than you might think – just make sure it’s compatible with your motherboard.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

This is the most expensive upgrade you can make to your PC. Your GPU is responsible for rendering images, videos, and animations.

It also determines how well your PC can run and display games.

It’s also handy for video editing and 3D rendering, as it can offload some of the work from your CPU.

Cooling system

A cooling system can make a big difference from a performance standpoint. If your PC is overheating, it will slow down to prevent damage to your hardware.

PCs are designed to operate within a specific temperature range, so you need a cooling system that keeps your PC within that range.

PC temperatures vary based on whether the computer is idle, gaming, or under heavy load, but generally, most desktop CPUs should stay between 60°C and 85°C.

A final thought

Before making any changes to your hardware, make sure you consider a few things: Is it worth it? Is it necessary? Is it compatible?

If it’s all of those things, go for it; you should see a significant improvement in your system, but consider alternatives before spending any money. Would you benefit from switching operating systems, or does the PC just need a good clean to see some positive changes?

Look at alternatives and upgrade your hardware only if you need to. Hardware procurement can be expensive, so make sure you’re getting the most out of it.
