A career in the IT industry is one of the most rewarding paths you can take. Technology is the heartbeat of modern business, and it’s constantly developing.

## How to start a career in IT

What’s great about a career in IT is that there’s no right way to get started. 

You can go the more conventional route of getting a degree in computer science, or another specific IT field, or you can go through the process of apprenticeships, working and learning simultaneously. 

Many people also get their start through self-taught paths. Helpful tools and sites like Skillshare, Codecademy, and W3Schools can all help you learn valuable skills in coding, hardware, and software.

A great way to make yourself stand out from the crowd is to earn certifications. CompTIA A+ and Microsoft Fundamentals (AZ-900) are strong indicators that you have a solid foundation in IT.

A career in IT requires commitment. Problems can happen at anytime, no matter what field you go into. You need to be ready to fix these issues and communicate them at any time.

So what can you expect in an IT career?

### Be ready to always learn

Technology is constantly changing and updating. You have to be prepared to be a lifelong student of IT. It’s not a job where you learn the skill, and you’re ready to go. 

New implementations, new processes, and new software mean that if you’re not learning, you’re falling behind. 

### Clear communication with all members of the team

Knowing both the problem and the solution to an IT issue that may have popped up within your (or a client’s) organisation is great. But be prepared to have to discuss this in plain English. 

Not everyone is equipped to understand IT jargon. What really fast-tracks your career is clear communication with everybody. 

### Know how to adapt

Technology can be unreliable; failures and data breaches are inevitable. 

One of the most difficult aspects of IT is composing yourself and acting with the precision you need to resolve and fix problems.

## What IT career is right for you

IT is a massive umbrella, so a tough part of the process is just figuring out which sector of IT you’d like to focus on.

This comes down to trialling multiple different fields: support, cybersecurity, cloud-based services, etc. and figuring out what field excites you the most. 

If direct communication with users and fixing daily technical issues is for you, the IT support route may suit you well. 

If you naturally want to focus on digital threats and enjoy staying one step ahead of data breaches and cyberattacks, then focus on security.

If you prefer the “big picture”, designing how data flows and managing server environments, then cloud management and architecture might be more your thing.

Growing a career in IT is a long process, and your growth in the field is limited only by your willingness to learn as much as you can.
