# What Is The Difference Between Cyber Security and Information Security?

Cyber security is a rapidly evolving industry. Threat actors and security engineers work in both a proactive and reactive manner, and little stay the same for a long period of time. As a result, the types of things that cyber security protects and the way in which it is implemented evolves. The value placed on information (particularly personal information) in the modern age has, by necessity, created an overlap with cyber security that deals with information specifically. The difference between cyber security and information security is that information security deals with the practice of protecting information, whereas cyber security is broader and applies to the protection of internet-facing assets (some of which may house information).

## **What Is Cyber Security?**

[Cyber security](https://cloudtech24.com/cyber-security-services/) is a general term used to refer to techniques, procedures, and protocols employed to protect assets and information. The target could be hardware, software, and information. Common cyber-attack methods include phishing, ransomware, and malware.

## **What Is Meant By Information Security?**

Information security is how businesses safeguard data and documents relating to business activities. For individuals, it refers to how someone secures their personal information, as well as their personal documents and data. Within a business, an Information Security Officer is responsible for overseeing the protection of business information.

### **Is Business Information Always Kept On Assets That Are Internet-Facing?**

No. Business information could be sitting on an on-site server that is not connected to an internet-facing network. In this specific example, Information Security relates to how that information is kept safe from threat actors, such as a disgruntled employee or a visitor. To do this, a business could employ protocols such as [Role-Based Access Control (RBAC](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-based_access_control)) to limit access to this information to only those who strictly need it to fulfil their job role. As this information would not be externally accessible via the internet, Information Security here would not be considered a subsection of Cyber Security.

## **What Are The Different Types of Cyber Security?**

There are many different types of cyber security, including:

- Network security;

- Information security;

- Endpoint security;

- Cloud security;

- Information security;

- Operational Security;

- IOT Security.

This is not an exhaustive list, and as the landscape continues to evolve, so too will the types of cyber security.

## **So, Is Information Security Its Own Thing?**

Yes. Information Security is its own branch of practices and protocols that do not necessarily sit wholly within the broader practice of Cyber Security. It is more that Information Security overlaps with Cyber Security and the two practices work together to achieve the same goal, which is a greater security posture for businesses.
