# What is scalability in cloud computing? Exploring growth opportunities

## Introduction

One of the cloud’s greatest assets is its ability to scale up and down to match the needs of a business. This partly explains why so many organisations are ditching their on-site equipment in favour of cloud computing.

Many businesses migrated their servers and applications to the cloud during the pandemic to accommodate the number of people working from home. And this trend shows no sign of slowing down.

[Research suggests](https://www.zippia.com/advice/cloud-adoption-statistics/) that by 2025, the cloud will hold an estimated 175 zettabytes of stored data. So, what is cloud scalability, and what can it offer your business?

### What is cloud scalability?

Scalability in cloud computing is the ability to increase or decrease IT resources in response to demand. Computing power, storage, or network capacity are all examples of the type of resources you can scale up or down.

A scalable cloud infrastructure can expand or contract its resources without you purchasing any extra physical equipment.

This is achieved using virtual machines (software-based emulations of physical computers) that can be hosted across multiple servers or moved to a different server.

### What is the difference between scalability and elasticity in cloud computing?

Though they sound similar, elasticity and scalability in cloud computing refer to different things.

- Cloud scalability refers to the pre-planned increase in workload to match business demand, supporting sustained, long-term growth.

- Elasticity describes a system’s ability to dynamically adjust to variable demands, such as a spike in website traffic as and when needed.

Both are important aspects of cloud computing. The predictability of your business will determine which one should take priority. Businesses with volatile demand should prioritise elasticity over scalability.

### What are the benefits of cloud scaling?

Access to high-powered computing is no longer reserved for those who can afford to buy and maintain expensive equipment. Businesses of all sizes can benefit from increased power and storage using the cloud.

By taking away the burden of having physical equipment on-site, you can free up resources to use elsewhere. With cloud computing, you only pay for what you need, making this one of the most cost-effective ways of managing your IT resources.

At the click of a button, you can add more virtual machines to your arsenal for greater reliability and accessibility.

What’s more, scalable cloud architectures often involve redundant systems and data backups. In the event of a failure, applications can quickly shift to alternative resources, minimising downtime and data loss.

### Scalability in cloud computing – the final word

[Migrating to the cloud](https://cloudtech24.com/digital-transformation/cloud-migration-services/) gives you the flexibility to increase your IT resources when you need to meet demand. You can increase your power, storage, and network capacity at the flick of a switch with minimal downtime.

For a business to stay competitive, it has to be agile, responsive and flexible – all made possible by cloud computing. Scalability remains cloud computing’s biggest advantage, putting it head and shoulders above alternative ways of managing IT resources.
